Gurney carries Irish hopes after Rock and Dolan exit darts’ World Grand Prix (1/1)

DARYL Gurney is aiming to keep the north’s hopes alive when he takes on Michael van Gerwen in the top of the bill slot at the big-money BoyleSports World Grand Prix in Leicester on Tuesday night (9.15pm).

The Derry man will start as the underdog against the three-time World champion but will be boosted by the knowledge that if he can find his A-game he is more than a match for anyone.

Belcoo’s Brendan Dolan and Broughshane’s Josh Rock were in first round action in the £600,000 showpiece on Monday night but both went down 2-0, to Martin Schindler and Ryan Joyce respectively.

The glamour event used to be held at Dublin’s Citywest Hotel with Fermanagh arrow ace Dolan blazing a trail back in 2011 when he earned his moniker ‘History Maker’ with the sport’s first ever double-in nine-darter, going on to reach the final where he lost to the great Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor.
