Drugs arrest after helicopter tracks motorcycle across west and north of Belfast (1/1)

A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drugs possession after being tracked across the west and north of Belfast by a police helicopter.

Members of the Air Support Unit first spotted a motorcycle being driven dangerously in the Beechmount area in the west shortly after 1opm on Wednesday evening. There was two people on board, police said.

The helicopter tracked the bike as it was driven on to the Westlink and then towards the New Lodge in north Belfastt.

Inspector Rab McKay said: “Officers on the ground were directed to the area to search for the motorcycle when they located a male in Henry Street, who made off from them when they attempted to speak with him, discarding a number of items as he ran.

“The male was detained a short time later and quantities of suspected cannabis were found both on his person and on the route he had taken whilst evading officers.

“He was arrested on suspicion of possessing a class B drug, possessing a class B drug with attempt to supply, resisting police and assault on police and remains in custody at this time.”
