Ombudsman pushes for update of compensation due for ‘accidents at work’

Portugal’s Ombudsman Maria Lúcia Amaral has said today that it is urgent to update the calculation of compensation awarded to workers who are victims of accidents at work or occupational diseases – arguing that it should reflect life expectancy and interest rates in force. In a recommendation addressed to the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Rosário Palma Ramalho, Ms Amaral states that “these two indicators, which are part of determining the amount to be paid, are largely outdated, generating disadvantageous situations for workers and undue benefits for the paying entities”.
