There are an estimated 100,000 electric vehicles circulating on Portugal’s roads, according the its National Statistics Institute (INE).

The figures, for the end of 2023, show that the number of people buying electric vehicles has continued to grow, albeit at a reduced rate compared to previous years, unlike other European countries which have seen sales continue to grow.

The Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP) is hopeful that, within three years, there will be 200,000 electric vehicles on Portugal’s roads.

“For the first time, there was a simultaneous decrease in petrol and diesel vehicles (-1.0% and -1.2%, respectively) while 100% electric vehicles saw their largest increase (+65.4%) and exceeded 100,000 units in circulation,” states the INE’s Statistics of Transport and Communications report for 2023.

The statistics were compiled based on database figures from the Institute of Mobility and Transport.

Helder Pedro, General-Secretary of the ACAP, says that the figures are not surprising given the increase in sales of these vehicles.

It is a segment that has posted strong growth. To 2023 we enjoyed three-digit sales of electric cars, increases of 120% and 110%,” he told the business daily Negócios.

Since the start of 2024, around 32,500 new 100% electric were put on the market and 130,000 new vehicles were circulating (a 15% growth on the same period last year) which is a relevant proportion of the whole market.
