The INCA Association (Investing in the Community with Love) is once again preparing to bring the true spirit of Christmas to life with the third edition of ‘Natal na Vila’ (Christmas in the Village), taking place from December 6 to 8 in Mexilhoeira Grande, Portimão.
Past editions have brought a variety of festive fun to the village, from an ice rink and carousels to living nativity scenes, Christmas carols and live music performances – all for free. Last year’s edition even featured the special presence of the Santo Amaro Choir of Oeiras.
This year’s celebration, however, is promising to be “even more special” as it will focus on supporting Alice, a local seven-year-old girl with Rett syndrome, a rare and incurable neurological condition that primarily affects girls. The disorder leads to severe impairments, affecting nearly every aspect of the child’s life: their ability to speak, walk, eat, and even breathe easily.
“Alice’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience that exists in our community, inspiring us to act with even more commitment to make a difference,” the association says.
This year’s edition will feature the usual Christmas fun that visitors expect, from stunning Christmas lights to fun activities for children, including the visit of Avô Cantigas, a beloved singer and performer.
“With Alice at the centre of the event, we seek to not only raise funds to help her treatment and support other families in need, but also remind everyone of the importance of looking out for each other,” the association says, adding that all proceeds will go towards the event’s cause.
The fair will begin at 8.30pm on Friday, December 6, 4pm on Saturday, December 7 and 12pm on Sunday, December 8. The full schedule can be found on the ‘Natal na Vila’ Facebook event page.
“Together, we can make this Christmas truly unforgettable and filled with meaning,” INCA adds.
Alice’s mother, Salomé, has set up a GoFundMe page where she provides further information (in Portuguese and English) on her daughter’s condition and where donations to help her cover her monthly expenses with treatment, which exceeded €1,200, can be made.
The International Rett Syndrome Foundation’s website also offers further information on the disorder.
