Portugal’s Polícia Judiciaria (PJ) have recaptured a second ‘prisoner-on-the-run’ following September’s hugely embarrassing mass jailbreak.
The second man – the only other Portuguese fugitive from the escape – is Fernando Ribeiro Ferreira, aged 61.
He was arrested after ““persistent, complex and uninterrupted investigation and information gathering work” in Castanheira de Chã, in the municipality of Montalegre, Trás-os-Montes.
Justice minister Rita Alarcão Júdice has praised the police force, saying the recapture “leaves us with a feeling of pride and confidence in our police forces” (something that is much needed in the context of recent events).
“This success was only possible thanks to the persistent and competent investigative work of the PJ. I would also like to praise the joint work of the police forces, in particular the collaboration of the GNR. The professionals who work every day to ensure that we have a safer country deserve our gratitude and recognition,” she added.
Ferreira is one of the original five escapees (now down to three, all of them foreigners) with an extensive criminal past.
According to a statement put out by the PJ today, he was first arrested in 1980. When he broke out of Vale de Judeus prison on September 7 with four other inmates, he was serving a 24-year sentence, for 11 separate convictions – his past centering on “highly organised crime, involving criminal association, murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, drug trafficking and possession of a prohibited weapon.
Now, the focus will be on trying to locate and recapture the final three:
Argentine Rodolfo José Lohrmann, 59, described as “one of Argentina’s most wanted” and a veteran of prison escapes; Mark Cameron Roscalee, 39, from the UK, in jail for crimes of kidnapping and robbery, and Georgian Shergili Farjiani, aged 40, serving seven years for theft, violence and falsification of documents, with an extradition order pending for his return to Georgia to face other crimes.
The first prisoner to be recaptured was Algarvian Fábio Loureiro, arrested in Morocco, reportely on his way to Algeria.
