Man dies in explosion in Ponta da Lima

Portugal Resident

A 57-year-old man is understood to have died instantly today in an explosion that took place when he was working on a 200-litre container full of ‘diluente’ (paint thinners). The tragedy happened in an annexe to a family home in the parish of Crasto, Ponte de Lima. The man was apparently working alone, and believed to have been using an angle grinder to cut in to the container*. Family members startled by the explosion went running to see what had happened, but found their relative already dead. According to reports, there was not a great deal of damage, but there were ‘marks of the container’ on the structure of the annexe. *An angle grinder emits sparks when working on metal, thus this will almost certainly have been the cause of the explosion.
