With national media in a froth over the potential candidacy of Chief of Staff of the Navy Admiral Gouveia e Melo for the presidency in 2026, CNN has reported that another possible name going into the hat is that of António José Seguro, the mild mannered former Socialist leader ‘ousted’ by António Costa in the summer of 2014 (before Costa went on to ‘win’ the next legislative elections, and stay at the helm for the next eight years). Seguro, now 62, has said “everything is open. Right now I am thinking” about whether or not to run. As for the likelihood of Admiral Gouveia e Melo standing for president, it appears to be increasing – even though he has been ‘asked to stay on’ in his Naval role, some say in order to remove him from being able to candidate as Portugal’s next president.
