‘Feira Franca’ fair in Albufeira dates back to 17th century

Albufeira’s autumn fair ‘Feira Franca’ has found a new home at a plot near the local marina after the event was held there successfully for the first time in 2023.

The event is returning between November 29 and December 1, bringing a wide variety of entertainment with it, from rides and carousels to stalls selling traditional products, food, clothing and much more.

“This is one of the most traditional fairs in the region, dating back to the 17th century, and which locals enjoy very much,” the municipal council of Albufeira says in a statement.

The first Feira Franca was held in the square by the Church of São Sebastião. Even back then, much like today, it was a popular event because vendors were exempt from paying taxes.

“Feira Franca is an integral part of local traditions and culture, serving as an event where the people of Albufeira and neighbouring municipalities come together to purchase goods at more affordable prices and enjoy quality time with family and friends,” says Albufeira mayor José Carlos Rolo.

The fair will run from 9am to 11pm and is free to visit.

In the meantime, Lagos is hosting its own ‘Feira Franca’ until Sunday (November 24).
