The Peace Pole is located in front of the local secondary school

The first Peace Pole in the Algarve was inaugurated last Tuesday (November 19), in Estoi, at 12.15pm. It is located in front of the local secondary school ‘Escola Básica Poeta Emiliano da Costa’.

In attendance were Vítor Rosão, President of Rotary Club Estoi Palace International (RCEPI), Rui Castelo, President of Rotary Club Faro, and Paula Messias, President of Rotary Club Coimbra Saúde.

One of the cornerstones of Rotary International’s areas of focus is Conflict Resolution and Peace.

1960 District Governor Paulo Taveira de Sousa congratulated the Clubs on their initiative at a time when there is such a great threat to world peace. Paulo Santos, Faro deputy mayor, expressed the same sentiments.

The Peace Pole Project is an international project which first started in Japan in 1955.  It is estimated that now there are currently more than 250,000 Peace Poles around the world.

In mainland Portugal, there are only three Peace Poles deployed, all of them in Coimbra. The Peace Poles are today recognised as one of the most important symbols and international monuments to Peace.

The message that appears in eight languages on each of the four sides of the pole  is “May Peace Prevail in the World“.
