If you thought the strawberry was just a summer fruit, think again: innovation is delivering 600,000 punnets to supermarkets that normally fly them from the Middle East.

Until now, Summer Berry Company, which is the UK’s largest grower of greenhouse strawberries, stopped growing them in mid-November and did not start again until March. But this year, for the first time, about 175,000 strawberry plants will produce 600,000 punnets of strawberries for Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer and Tesco during the winter.

The farm is believed to be the first one to achieve the “all-year strawberry” on a commercial scale. It has installed £6m of new technology so it can grow British strawberries 365 days a year
