When the married couple Sydney Bradford and Andrew Benbow — a Democrat and a Republican — decided to set up a bar in Washington encouraging others to reach across the political divide, they did not expect screaming in the streets.

But with just weeks to go until a presidential election marked by some of the most divisive rhetoric in recent memory, they underestimated the strength of feeling in the nation’s capital.

“A woman was crossing the street with two friends — you could tell she’d been drinking — and she screamed. It was blood curdling: she saw our logo, and she shrieked,” Bradford said
