Training for a marathon is one route to fitness but building very short “micro walks” into your day may also be a path to better health, a study suggests.

Researchers found that when people broke up a walk into stints of 10-30 seconds, with breaks in between, they used up to 60% more energy than covering the same distance in one go.

According to Dr Francesco Luciano of the University of Milan, who led the study, the main message should be that fleeting spells of physical activity, such as getting to your feet to make a cup of tea, can make a surprisingly large difference to how many calories you burn.
