Measures to limit air pollution could lead to 80,000 fewer cat and dog visits to the vet each year, a study has found.

A team at the London School of ­Economics (LSE) estimated that cutting a pollutant produced by cars and power stations to levels recommended by the World Health Organisation would save about £15m a year in pet care costs.

While an extensive body of scientific literature explains how exposure to dirty air affects the physical and mental health of people, there is relatively little research into its impact on animals
