During Donald Trump’s first term in office he infuriated America’s European allies by imposing blanket tariffs of up to 25% on steel and aluminium imports.

The Conservative government appealed to Trump to exclude Britain from the taxes as a sign of the special relationship and an endorsement of Britain’s decision to leave the EU. Those appeals fell on deaf ears.

This time round Trump is proposing to impose much more significant tariffs of 10-20% on all imports including those from the UK. Economists say the move would cost the UK economy £21.5b and significantly damage the country’s £60b worth of goods exports to the United States
