Sir Keir Starmer has hailed the arrest of a Turkish man suspected of supplying small boats as a “significant piece of the jigsaw” in the fight against Channel migrant crossings.

The 44-year-old suspect is accused of shipping dinghies and engines from Turkey and storing them in Germany before they are moved to northern France for crossings. Boats and engines he allegedly supplied are likely to have been involved in transporting thousands of people to the UK over several years.

He was detained at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam on Wednesday following a joint investigation by the Dutch and Belgian authorities and the UK’s National Crime Agency
