A cup of tea and a gin and tonic are probably the two most quintessentially British drinks so asking the public to choose between them is like asking whether they prefer David Attenborough or Queen Elizabeth.

Yet in a recent survey, more than 2,000 Britons were faced with this very dilemma and — by the slimmest of margins — G&T won the day.
